Officer-Involved Shooting (OIS) Response & Documentation
24-Hour Training for Law Enforcement & Crime Scene Personnel
This focused 24-hour course is designed to provide officers, investigators, and crime scene personnel with the essential knowledge and skills required to properly respond to, assess, and document an Officer-Involved Shooting (OIS) incident. Participants will learn the critical steps necessary to preserve the integrity of the scene, ensure accurate evidence collection, and support a thorough and defensible investigation.
Through a combination of lecture, case review, and practical application, students will be introduced to best practices in scene security, evidence recognition, firearm and trajectory documentation, officer/witness statements, and agency protocols. Emphasis is placed on the collaborative roles of patrol officers, detectives, and forensic specialists during an OIS investigation.
Training topics include:
Initial response priorities and scene stabilization
Legal, administrative, and investigative considerations unique to OIS cases
Proper evidence handling involving firearms, cartidge cases, trajectories, and biological evidence
Documentation methods including notes, photography, measurements, and diagrams
Coordination with District Attorney, Internal Affairs, and outside investigative agencies
Common mistakes and how to avoid compromised evidence or procedural errors
By the end of this course, participants will have a clear understanding of their responsibilities during an OIS event and the skills needed to support a transparent, defensible, and professionally managed investigation.

OIS Investigation and Scene Documentation
This 24 hours will provide the crime scene investigator, detective, and/or criminalist on proper crime scene documentation and investigative techniques involving Officer Involved Shootings (OIS). Instruction will be provided by seasoned homicide detectives and crime scene investigators.
